Repaired and restored. This repaired jacket has been through a lot, but with a lightweight coating of PERCVD, a repaired piece of outerwear can have added functionality, now repelling water and stains.

Twinery – Innovations by MAS, a global leader in innovative textile solutions, is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking technology, PERCVD (read: Perceived), which stands for Plasma Enhanced Repeatable Chemical Vapor Deposition. This proprietary innovation is now ready for commercial trials, and Twinery invites collaboration from industry stakeholders to revolutionize garment lifecycle management.

The Urgency of Garment Longevity: Beyond Sustainability

Sustainability is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’—it’s a necessity. Consumers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly practices, and regulations are rapidly catching up. The EU’s recent ban on the disposal of repairable clothing and similar initiatives in California, New York, and Massachusetts highlight a global shift towards extending garment lifespans.

“Recycling and downcycling are important first steps,” acknowledges Ranil Vitarana, CEO of Twinery, “but they don’t address the core issue: keeping clothes in use for longer.” Here’s where PERCVD comes in.

Introducing PERCVD: A Multi-Functional Approach to Long-Lasting Apparel

PERCVD is a fibre-level coating that extends the lifespan of clothing by adding or restoring functionality without altering hand feel, drapability, or fabric colour. It is done through a simple process akin to using a large microwave: open, add the clothing, and close to start—a straightforward process that is easy onshore and does not require specialised training.

This innovative solution boasts three key functionalities:

  • Durable Water Repellency (DWR): PERCVD enhances new or used clothing with water-repellency properties, adding or restoring functionality
  • Easy Stain Release (ESR): The PERCVD coating allows easy stain release with a simple cold-water wash, reducing the need for harsh chemicals and energy-intensive washing cycles that would otherwise further damage a garment
  • Enhanced Hygiene: PERCVD provides effective sterilization, making it ideal for reuse in various industries

Sustainable Innovation: Beyond the Technology

The PERCVD process itself embodies sustainability:

  • Zero Water Usage: Unlike traditional water repellency methods, PERCVD requires no water, minimising its environmental footprint
  • PFAS-Free: The treatment does not contain harmful PFAS commonly found in water repellents, safeguarding consumers and the environment
  • ZDHC-Approved Chemicals: PERCVD utilizes chemicals approved by the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals initiative, further demonstrating Twinery’s commitment to responsible manufacturing

PERCVD: Business Model Applications

PERCVD’s power extends beyond the technical aspects. Its business model applications offer a win-win for both brands and consumers:

  • Recharge: Through PERCVD, consumers can recharge their clothing by topping up lost functionality, thereby allowing them to use their clothing for extended periods of time – especially high-value garments like jackets. This is crucial amid global regulations that have been introduced which ban the disposal of repairable garments
  • Rental: PERCVD’s Easy Stain Release (ESR) coating addresses one of the main reasons that renters dispose of garments – stains. Through this coating, gentle cleaning methods that avoid the use of harsh chemicals and intense wash cycles, which would otherwise further damage garments, can be used for easier stain removal. For renters, this enables longer rental periods and reduces the need for frequent replacements, translating to greater return on investment and reduced environmental impact by lowering the number of garments going to landfill
  • Resale: PERCVD can introduce and reintroduce functionalities such as DWR while ensuring hygiene through its sterilization functionality. Through this, garments can be re-vitalized and be given another life with a new owner, who has a garment that is as good as new

Collaboration for a Circular Future

Developed in Sri Lanka and now available for customer trials in the UK, PERCVD is poised to make a real-world impact. Twinery has partnered with Fishers, a commercial laundry and textile rental giant, and re-commerce expert, ACS Clothing. These collaborations will showcase the efficacy and scalability of PERCVD in real-life scenarios.

The time for change is now. Twinery invites apparel industry stakeholders to join the journey towards a more sustainable future.
