Youngone ends coal use in Vietnam, moves towards 40% emissions cut goal

The journey towards this eco-friendly transformation commenced in early 2023 and involved the overhaul of three pivotal boilers at the Nam Dinh site, encompassing both steam and thermal hot oil boilers.

The company conducted comprehensive feasibility studies and meticulous design planning process.

By the third quarter of that year, the first biomass boiler was installed, paving the way for additional installations. The biomass boilers leverage rice husk pellets as a renewable energy source.

The initiative is perfectly attuned to Youngone's global policy that emphasises climate action and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Youngone Group vice chairman Rae Eun Sung said: "The successful completion of our coal phase-out project in Nam Dinh is a testament to Youngone’s dedication to sustainability and climate action. By transitioning to biomass boilers and recycling boiler ash into organic fertiliser, we are reducing our carbon footprint, repurposing waste, and supporting the local community.

“This project is a key step in meeting our 2030 carbon reduction goals and sets a precedent for sustainable practices across our global operations.”

To ensure the sustainability and traceability of their new biofuel source, Youngone worked with local rice mills for sourcing rice husk pellets. This not only mitigated the environmental impact of coal but also helped bolster the regional agricultural sector by converting agricultural by-products into a valuable energy resource.

Furthermore, the resulting ash from these processes is destined for treatment and conversion into organic fertiliser, noted the company.

With an investment exceeding $2.7m in biomass technology and waste recycling initiatives, Youngone is actively embedding new and sustainable solutions within its international operations.

The company is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of outdoor wear, sportswear, shoes, and bags for various brands.

Established in 1974, the company also operates manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, and India. Its business presence extends across 17 countries, employing over 90,000 individuals globally.
