Tandem Repeat, Arctos secure $1.5m to scale bio-textile manufacturing

Biotechnology company Tandem Repeat and aerospace and defence contractor Arctos Technology Solutions have been awarded $1.5m by the US Department of Defense (DoD)'s Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Programme to advance domestic bio-textile manufacturing.

The funding aims to scale up the production of Tandem Repeat's bio-based fibres, which are inspired by proteins found in squids.

“This investment will enable us to increase our production from pilot scale of 500kg to commercial scale of 1,000 metric tonnes and meet the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance materials," said Dr Melik Demirel, Huck Endowed Chair Professor at Penn State University and co-founder of Tandem Repeat.

The Department of Defense's Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Programme seeks to enhance domestic supply chains for critical materials, reduce logistical burdens and support sustainable defence solutions.

Tandem Repeat's innovative biotechnological approach is described to address these needs by leveraging proteins to create durable, environmentally friendly fibres.

Tandem Repeat's bio-based fibres claim to offer several advantages over traditional synthetic materials including enhanced strength, durability, adaptability to various conditions and PFAS-free textiles. These characteristics are said to make them ideal for multiple applications, from military uniforms to advanced composite materials.

Arctos director of biotechnology programmes Kent J. Smith commented: "We aim to develop and position novel biotechnologies for defence applications while promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, our work aims to ensure that critical material production remains secure and reliable in the face of increasing global challenges."

The DoD's investment aligns with its strategy to enhance domestic supply chains for critical materials. Tandem Repeat's project will focus on the fabrication sector, an area supported by DoD, to develop advanced fibres and textiles that meet the stringent requirements of military applications.

Tandem Repeat said its technology addresses environmental challenges associated with traditional synthetic fibres like polyester, including microfibre pollution and high energy demands. The company aims to mitigate these issues by developing bio-based alternatives and contributing to a more sustainable industry with PFAS-free textiles.

In 2022 Tandem Repeat won $525,000 as part of Conservation X Labs’ Microfiber Innovation Challenge for its ability to reduce or prevent microfibre pollution.
