Starting in August 2024, M&S customers will be able to book repair services using a new online hub called M&S Fixed by SOJO.
M&S said the repair service will be a “key pillar” of its plan to support the circular economy.
Founded in 2021, SOJO employs a team of tailors, riders, developers and creatives to make tailoring and repairs more accessible.
Services offered through the hub will include zip replacements and invisible knitwear mending for M&S clothing, which customers will be able to book using an online form.
The cost of the service will start at £5 ($6.32) and consumers can expect repaired items to be returned to their doorsteps within seven to ten days.
Research conducted by M&S found just 10% of consumers are confident enough to repair clothing themselves and 60% are looking for retailers to offer options that allow them to reduce their carbon footprint.
M&S already provides a donation and reuse service alongside charity Oxfam, which has so far collected more than 36m items of clothing and raised an estimated £23m for the charity.
“At M&S, exceptional quality products are at the heart of everything we do, and we want to ensure that all our clothes are too good to waste,” commented Richard Price, managing director of clothing & home at M&S.
He continued: “Through the launch of our repair service, we’re making it even easier for customers to give their clothes another life, whether they are using our new repair service or long-standing clothes recycling scheme.”
SOJO CEO and founder Josephine Phillips added: “It has always been a core mission of ours at SOJO to make repairing clothes mainstream and to extend the life of as many garments as possible. I’m so excited that M&S has chosen to launch a repair service with us at SOJO as it’s an incredibly big step towards that mission.
“As a brand that has remained a firm constant in almost every household and wardrobe in Britain, this partnership with truly bring easy, accessible and convenient repairs to the masses. Beyond that, as one of the longest standing British brands, having M&S join our pledge to repair adds such a great weight to our call for industry-wide change here in the UK.”
In April 2024, M&S pledged £1m of funding for ‘collaborative, pioneering projects’.
