GATS, Green Story partner on Panipat’s textile carbon footprint

Non-profit organisation Global Alliance for Textiles Sustainability Council (GATS) has established a collaborative agreement with Green Story to quantify and communicate the carbon emissions of the Panipat Textiles Cluster.

The joint effort will focus on using a structured approach to calculate the carbon footprint of the cluster, offering clear data regarding its ecological impact and adherence to sustainable operations.

Green Story is a product environmental footprint intelligence platform, specialising in lifecycle assessments, carbon footprint analysis, and digital tools for sustainability.

The platform is also an authorised verifier for the Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM), a tool used to assess sustainability by providing a standardised approach for facilities to measure and evaluate their environmental performance on an annual basis.

Using Green Story's proficiency in evaluating sustainability metrics, this collaboration is poised to equip brands, financial entities, and regulatory bodies with critical data that can inform impactful modifications within the textile supply framework.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between GATS and Green Story is expected to help construct a narrative for both business and environmental benefits on an international scale, showcasing Panipat's achievements in areas such as textile reuse, circular processes, and reduction of carbon emissions.

This initiative is anticipated to enhance Panipat's global standing in sustainability, attracting partnerships and financial engagements that are consistent with the values of a circular economy.

Panipat, a city in the Indian state of Haryana, has already gained recognition for its dedication to eco-friendly textile practices, particularly in recycling and waste management.

Demonstrating innovation at Bharat Tex 2025

A key milestone in the partnership between GATS and Green Story will be showcased at Bharat Tex 2025.

Green Story, in collaboration with Recyclr (a GATS-affiliated company), will unveil a groundbreaking Digital Product Passport (DPP) for a pair of jeans made from recycled materials.

This denim is made from mechanically recycled fibres sourced from post-industrial waste, produced through sustainable manufacturing processes that meet the highest industry standards:

• Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) – All wastewater is fully treated and recycled, preventing environmental discharge.

• Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) – No hazardous chemicals are used throughout the supply chain.

Why it matters?

• The absence of hazardous chemicals ensures safer working conditions and protects the environment.

• Textile recycling helps conserve resources and reduces fashion's environmental impact.

• Wastewater is entirely filtered and reused, preventing pollution and safeguarding natural water resources.

Visitors to Bharat Tex 2025 will have the opportunity to experience the potential of this collaboration at the Sustainability Pavilion (Hall 3).

The event is scheduled from 12 to 17 February 2025 at India’s capital, New Delhi.
