Birla Cellulose, Algaeing to ‘detoxify’ apparel sector with ‘algae-powered’ fibre

Aditya Birla Group's pulp and fibre business Birla Cellulose has partnered with clean textile innovation company Algaeing to introduce an environment-friendly "algae-powered" cellulosic fibre in bid to "detoxify the textile industry".

Birla Cellulose explained the new partnership to develop an 'algae-powered' fibre aims to create sustainable, biodegradable and zero waste solutions for the fashion industry.

It also claimed the algae-powered fibre will redefine the textile manufacturing process by offering a palette of naturally occurring colours using algae's rich and varied hues and will eliminate the need for traditional dyeing processes.

The partnership hopes to bring a variety of dyeless garments to the market while significantly reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional dyeing processes.

Birla Cellulose said the fibre can also be used for toxin-free production thanks to the rich nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and botanical properties that ere inherent in the algae being added to the fibre.

Aditya Birla Group and Birla Cellulose's chief technology officer Aspi Patel said: "This developmental collaboration with Algaeing aligns well with Birla Cellulose’s focus on offering more sustainable fibers to consumers. We are keen to develop and scale this innovative new cellulosic fiber in collaboration with Algaeing."

Algaeing co-founder and CEO Renana Krebs believes the collaboration with Birla Cellulose marks a significant milestone in its joint mission to "detoxify" the textile industry and promote sustainable innovation.

Krebs added: "Joining hands with a global leader like Birla Cellulose amplifies our impact, allowing us to bring affordable, superior products to consumers and branch into new industries. Together, we are carving a path for a brighter future, where fashion and sustainability seamlessly converge."

Last month (November 2023) the Aditya Birla Group company joined forces with textile innovator SaXcell to produce recycled man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) in an effort to accelerate circularity.

At the time, Birla Cellulose explained that SaXcell’s textile waste pulping technology combined with Birla Cellulose’s advanced wet spinning expertise result in high quality sustainable SaXcell recycled fibres that serve the circular textile needs of customers at commercial scale.

Global menswear market dynamics

Global menswear market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 4% by 2027, as consumer confidence takes time to rebuild following inflationary pressures. The popularity of the resale market will also somewhat hinder menswear retail growth, as more shoppers will divert spend away from traditional retailers and brands to secondhand channels, in a bid to save money and protect the planet.
