Ambercycle’s cycora ‘sets new standard’ for recycled materials

The European Centre for Innovative Textiles (CETI) in France has recognised material science company Ambercycle's cycora material as a circular alternative that meets the spinnability standards of virgin materials and outperforms other recycled materials.

According to CETI's independent assessment, cycora material can be used as a circular alternative that does not compromise on product integrity, setting "a new standard for recycled materials".

Cycora was first introduced by Ambercycle in 2021 as a material that uses end-of-life textiles as feedstock for new high-performance polyester.

Ambercycle claims that, unlike conventional recycled materials, which face limitations in quality and application, cycora polyester maintains consistent quality without compromising on performance. This enables the creation of long-lasting products, reducing waste and extending the environmental benefits this breakthrough material.

Manisha Mariva, recycling and circular economy manager of CETI, said: "Our comprehensive testing showed that cycora material performed as well as a virgin alternative in a battery of processes and stands out from other recycled textiles for its performance and versatility. Cycora material is a noteworthy contributor to the industry and is establishing a new standard for recycled materials."

Ambercycle's CEO Shay Sethi believes that sustainability should not come at the cost of quality. He added: "The recognition from CETI reaffirms our mission to redefine industry norms and prove that excellence and environmental responsibility can coexist seamlessly."

Ambercycle says the high-performance standards of cycora underscore its commitment to innovation, sustainability and its mission to build "true circularity in fashion".

In October 2023, Spanish fashion conglomerate Inditex entered into a three-year partnership with Ambercycle, to purchase cycora for more than €70m ($73m).

This substantial purchase commitment was a key step towards the establishment of Ambercycle’s first commercial-scale textile regeneration facility.

In November 2023, Drive Catalyst, the venture capital arm of the Far Eastern Group, invested $5m in Ambercycle, to scale textile-to-textile regeneration in the apparel industry.
