A new White House report on plans to double US exports in the next five years has been lauded as “a solid step forward for US trade policy” by the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA).

The report to President Obama on the National Export Initiative (NEI) details the way in which the Export Promotion Cabinet plans to reach the export goals set by the President.

Since the NEI was announced, the Department of Commerce’s Advocacy Center is said to have supported US$11.8bn in US exports and an estimated 70,000 jobs, co-ordinating 20 trade missions with over 250 US companies to 25 countries.

“As American consumers spend a little less and save a little more, it has never been more important to connect US businesses to the 95% of the world’s consumers who live outside our borders,” said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.

AAFA president and CEO Kevin Burke said the plan was “a solid step forward for US trade policy”, but warned against neglecting the US market, calling for domestic action too to protect jobs and foster growth at home.
