The American apparel industry welcomed the President’s announcement yesterday (22 September) that that the US plans to double its purchase of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to share with the world, taking the level to 1bn doses and aiming to reach 70% vaccination of the global population within the next year.

In a statement, the AAFA says it applauds the administration for continued efforts to get vaccines out to the public – both in the United States and abroad – and for the clear leadership of the United States on this issue.

“Only when we bring the global crisis under control can we bring the pandemic to an end and continue the all-important economic recovery,” it notes.

AAFA senior vice president of policy Nate Herman adds: “The only way to fully address the simultaneous health and economic crises from Covid-19 – and address the devastation of the Delta variant – is to get vaccines in arms of the most vulnerable around the world. We urge President Biden to double down on this promise to ensure the vaccines get to these countries right away – not a year from now, not six months from now – in order to make a real difference.

“With so many hurting in our trading partner countries in Southeast Asia – particularly Vietnam and Bangladesh – we ask that the US rush to their aid.”

The comments come as a statement from the White House notes the United States is donating over 1.1bn doses and calls for nations that are able to vaccinate their populations to double their dose-sharing commitments or to make “meaningful contributions to vaccine readiness.”

President Biden also took to Twitter to announce the news:

The AAFA has been a vocal advocate of both vaccine access and the commitment of individuals to get the shot. Earlier this month, the body welcomed the President’s announcement that vaccine mandates will go into effect for a large portion of the US workforce.

It has also been advocating for the equitable distribution of vaccine supply to the US’ international partners for several months.
