Dutch clean-tech startup The Movement has developed an eco-efficient fibre that imitates real fur in all its characteristics and can be used for the production of faux fur.
The Polylana fibre’s composition excludes the use of acrylic making it substantially less impactful upon production.

The Movement says it hopes to provide this alternative to designers, brands and retailers that want to act on their environmental impact but have been skeptical about the quality and hand-feel of current more sustainable faux fur.
“Due to a rising push towards sustainability, the use of various less impactful material alternatives has become increasingly common,” the company says. “While this is a step in the right direction, the use of such materials often comes at a cost for brands and retailers. Certain fabrics do not boast any sustainable alternative. This is the case of faux fur, which is primarily made from acrylic, a material that is considerably impactful. Replacing the acrylic in faux fur with more sustainable materials has a quality impact on the texture and hand-feel of the final product. Which is obviously less than ideal for brands and retailers.”
The Polylana fibre for faux fur was showcased at the Yarn Expo 2021 Spring in Shanghai. The Movement says the Polylana team has managed to create “true alternatives to more impactful materials with little drawbacks and offers hope for a cleaner textile industry”.
The Movement offers innovative sustainable fibre and yarn solutions for the textile industry, which are 100% traceable. In addition to the Polylana fibre, the company has an integrity solution called Aware that can authenticate recycled yarns in a final product to verify sustainability claims and avoid greenwashing.
