A seminar is taking place in the UK next week to help brands and retailers better understand all the factors affecting the cost of a garment.
The upcoming technical seminar organised by the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry (ASBCI) and Discover e-Solutions (DeSL) will address how to accurately cost garments – and control those costs – in today’s increasingly complex supply chains.

Starting with a comprehensive overview of costing basics, the seminar will take delegates through the challenges and opportunities of Far East sourcing and consider everything from sourcing strategy to labour costs, material costs, and importing and logistics.
Dave Richards, director and co-founder of end-to-end solutions provider DeSL, will deliver the keynote presentation on how to achieve systematic control of garment costs. He will be followed by John McClure, head of sourcing – Far East, for M&S, who will explain how sourcing strategies can affect the cost of a garment.
Other speakers include Louis Van Kirk, senior work study engineer and performance manager for UK manufacturer and retailer David Nieper, whose role includes identifying ways for the company’s production section to work ‘smarter not harder’ and improve productivity. His presentation will focus on labour costs and compare the relative benefits of cheap labour versus efficient methods of production.
Further insights will be provided by David Bell, managing director of Assyst Bullmer, who will look at how to optimise material costs; and Stuart Greenfield and Joe Shudall from Advanced Supply Chain Group, who will explain how to factor in and control logistics costs.
