US footwear maker Sperry has announced the launch of a new sustainable collection made using recycled plastic waste.
The Sperry Bionic range features three styles of Sperry shoe made using material spun from plastic recovered from marine and coastal environments. The range comprises the Authentic Original Bionic Boat Shoe, the Crest Twin Gore Bionic Sneaker in a men’s or women’s option and the Captain’s Slip on Bionic Sneaker, again in a men’s or women’s option.

According to the company, each pair of shoes is woven from an average of five bottles.
In addition, because packaging is also a “pollution offender”, Sperry says its shoe boxes for the collection are also made from post-consumer recycled materials, printed with water or soy-based inks, and without adhesive, so everything can be easily recycled once again.
The launch is a partnership between Sperry and Waterkeeper Alliance, which patrols and protects more than 2.5m sq miles of rivers, lakes, and coastlines in the Americas, Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa, and material engineering company Bionic, and is a bid to eliminate plastic waste in oceans.
The range is priced at between US$69.95-$99.95.
