Digital supply chain mapping platform Sourcemap is participating in a new project led by Verité to support enhanced tracing of goods made with child labour, forced labour, and other exploitative practices.
The Supply Chain Tracing and Engagement Methodologies initiative (STREAMS) will work in collaboration with the Better Cotton Initiative, Phylagen, RCS Global and the Responsible Sourcing Network. It will also lean on Sourcemap’s traceability technology and expertise in pilots of new synergies between supply chain tracing and validation methodologies in the garment industry in India.
Global estimates indicate that 152m children are in child labour and 25m adults and children are in forced labour worldwide. Many of these people, and the goods produced through their labour, are part of vast and complex global supply chains.
Increasingly, governments, civil society, and consumers are seeking ways to hold companies accountable for exploitative labour conditions throughout their supply chains. Similarly, responsible companies are seeking ways to identify abusive labour practices within their complex global supply chains and to mitigate and remediate such abuses.
The STREAMS initiative aims to increase the dissemination of supply chain tracing tools and methodologies to a broad range of stakeholders. Funding is provided by the United States Department of Labor.
The US Department of Labor awarded US$8m across two projects last week, including the project led by Verité.
