Pertex will incorporate NetPlus into several of its key fabrics, including Pertex Quantum, Shield, and Equilibrium, ensuring they meet the same rigorous standards as those made from virgin nylon.

Lab tests confirmed that NetPlus matches the durability and quality of virgin Nylon 6 but significantly reduces environmental impacts, including 20% lower greenhouse gas emissions, 70% less water usage, 67% reduction in fossil fuel consumption, and 68% less energy usage.

This collaboration highlights both companies’ commitment to expanding responsible material solutions, aiming to reduce environmental impact without compromising fabric performance.

Since its founding in 2013, Bureo has worked to end fishing net pollution by offering fishermen an end-of-life solution for their discarded nets, converting them into fully traceable, premium Nylon 6 material.

“These fabrics are engineered to be direct replacements for fabrics made from virgin material, not just to be resigned to minor ‘sustainable’ capsule collections,” said Andy Laycock, Pertex brand director. “This allows significant and measurable reductions in fossil fuel reliance and greenhouse gas emissions, whilst helping to empower fishing communities and protect marine ecosystems.”

The partnership will bring Pertex’s recycled fabrics to market in Fall/Winter 2024, with leading brands such as Patagonia, Macpac, Burton Snowboards, Albion Cycling, and Jöttnar using the material.

David Stover, co-founder of Bureo, emphasised the alignment of the two companies’ missions and said: “Our work at Bureo is dedicated to accelerating solutions for a cleaner world and supporting the replacement of virgin plastics within supply chains.

“We share this vision with the committed team at Pertex, and we are grateful for their partnership and industry leadership to incorporate more responsible, non-extractive materials into the Pertex product line.”

In 2022, Pertex partnered with Cycora, the regenerated material created from end-of-life textile waste, to develop performance wovens from landfill-destined textile waste for the outdoor and sportswear markets.
