US sporting goods giant NIKE has revealed a new cushioning system made from thousands of thermoplastic elastomer or TPE beads that work to create a personalised footbed that forms to the foot.

Joining Nike Air and Nike React in the company’s array of cushioning platforms, Nike Joyride is engineered with a 14% better impact absorption when compared to some of Nike’s “most trusted running shoes,” including the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 36 and Nike Epic React FK2.

The Nike-only, proprietary system works by placing the TPE beads within zonally-tuned pods that allow the foam to expand in all directions — what Nike calls “multi-dimensional displacement.”

The pod scale is based on how the foot strikes the ground when in motion. The heel pod, for example, is bigger to absorb impact, while those at the forefoot are prepared to facilitate a smooth transition forward.

Beads are dispersed within the pods to match the zonal-tuning that aligns with the performance needs of specific points in the wearer’s stride. For example, if there are 8,000 total beads in a running shoe, some 50% of the beads would cover the heel strike while 5% would offer cushioning at the toe.

The sensation, Nike says, is almost like “running on bubbles.”
