Garment workers in Bangladesh are to receive financial assistance via mobile money transfer thanks to a new agreement inked by the country’s Labour Welfare Foundation.
Started by the government of Bangladesh to compensate workers or their children in case of injuries or death at the workplace, the new agreement is between the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation (BLF), state-owned Rupali Bank and mobile money transferring agency SureCash, which has developed an open payment network in partnership with five Bangladeshi banks and more than 650 payment partners.
“Until today, the workers had to apply for financial assistance manually. From now on, they can also apply online,” State minister for labour and employment, Mujibul Haque, told local media. “After scrutiny, Sure Cash will transfer the money to the applicant’s mobile phone through mobile money transfer. If there is anything wrong with the application, the applicant will be notified immediately. This will ensure quick, hassle-free and a transparent system for the financial assistance.”
