According to local reports, in a meeting with the Minister of Housing and Public Works at the Bangladesh Secretariat, BGMEA president Faruque Hassan highlighted the RMG industry’s transition towards sustainable business practices, particularly the growing number of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly garment factories in Bangladesh.

Hassan is confident the green transition would not only enhance Bangladesh’s “competitive edge” in the global market, but also its position as a leader in sustainable garment manufacturing.

Government support, including policy assistance and easy access to finance, is being sought in the belief it is crucial to facilitating the growth of green industries in the country.

In the meeting, Hassan reportedly urged the Bangladesh government to “streamline” business-related laws and regulations, including taxation, value-added tax (VAT) and other aspects of cross-border trade, to facilitate a more business-friendly environment.

Recently, BGMEA applauded Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port Authority’s decision to withdraw the value-added tax (VAT) on port services for export-oriented industries.

Last week, Hassan also met with the Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh, H.E. Heru Hartanto Subolo, to enhance bilateral trade, particularly in the apparel and textile sector.

These discussions included a range of trade-related matters, with both parties expressing a strong interest in identifying new avenues for collaboration, aiming to maximise the full potential of mutual trade and investment.
