The government of Bangladesh has set up a temporary control room in the country’s capital in a bid to avoid any labour unrest in the apparel sector in the run-up to the Islamic festival of Eid-ul Azha.

Located in the Dhaka district office of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) at Purana Paltan, the aim is to prevent unrest among garment workers, which has been known to take place if salaries and bonuses are not paid prior to the holiday.

Eid al-Adha 2018 will begin in the evening of 21 August and end on 25 August.

According toThe Financial Express, over the last several years the export-oriented garment sector has been hit by worker unrest over payment of salaries and bonuses before the Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-ul Azha festivals.

“To take necessary steps instantly to check any possible untoward incidents in the readymade garment (RMG) sector, we have set up a control room…We are monitoring the situation round the clock. There is no possibility of labour unrest [at] this time,” DIFE ABM Golam Parvez told the publication.

Meanwhile, in a similar move, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exports Association (BGMEA) has reportedly strengthened security measures at garment hubs in Dhaka, Tongi, Ashulia, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Chattogram, to avoid any “untoward incidents.”
