Fashion firms Lacoste and Fast Retailing are the latest to join a long list of companies that have banned mohair from their products following reports of goats mutilated and killed in shearing sheds.
The moves follow video footage released earlier this year by animal rights group PETA, detailing the abuse of angora goats at farms in South Africa – the source of more than 50% of the world’s mohair.

“In pledging to implement a ban, the iconic French fashion label joins more than 330 other brands worldwide that have already committed to doing so, including, most recently, Fast Retailing whose brands include Uniqlo and GU,” PETA says.
Lacoste did not respond to request for comment from just-style.
However, a spokesperson for Fast Retailing confirmed it is phasing mohair out of its collections so that by 2020 none of its products will contain the fibre. “Fast Retailing believes that animals should always be treated well and bred according to ethical husbandry practices,” the spokesperson added.
