This advancement is aimed at addressing the issue of microplastic pollution stemming from the shedding of synthetic textiles.

The development of REPREVE enhanced by CiCLO technology is the result of a collaborative effort with Intrinsic Advanced Materials, a partnership between Parkdale Advanced Materials and Intrinsic Textiles Group.

This innovation aims to substantially diminish the duration that synthetic fibres contribute to environmental pollution while preserving their inherent strength and functional qualities, explains UNIFI.

The integration of CiCLO technology into REPREVE involves the infusion of a specialised additive at the fibre stage, enabling synthetic yarns to emulate natural fibres like wool in their degradation process.

The fibres are engineered to decompose in various conditions such as soil and ocean water without sacrificing attributes such as performance, resilience, and colourfastness.

REPREVE fibres equipped with CiCLO technology are designed to biodegrade when subjected to environments rich in moisture and microbial activity, thereby reducing the longevity of microplastics in nature, notes the company.

Presently, products containing CiCLO are being adopted by environmentally conscious brands including Bass Pro Shops, Billabong, Champion, Oakley, and Target.

UNIFI CEO Eddie Ingle said: “We can always do more to lessen our environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.

“Our collaboration with Intrinsic Advanced Materials addresses the worldwide issue of synthetic microfiber shedding by providing a globally available solution that mills, brands, and retailers can now integrate to reduce microplastic fibre pollution.”

The entire range of REPREVE-branded merchandise can be manufactured using the CiCLO additive. This includes varieties such as REPREVE Takeback and REPREVE Our Ocean.

With global availability, REPREVE featuring CiCLO technology is said to offer an easily integrated option for companies aiming to address international concerns over microplastic pollution.

UNIFI plans to feature its REPREVE portfolio with CiCLO technology during the ongoing Functional Fabric Fair scheduled for 14-16 April at the Oregon Convention Center. Additionally, attendees can find CiCLO technology showcased separately.

Parkdale Advanced Materials vice president Cheryl Smyre said: “Synthetic textiles are a major contributor to microplastic fibre pollution, and it is a challenge that requires industry collaboration.

This joint initiative integrates two powerful solutions—REPREVE and CiCLO technology—to help maximise recycled content while addressing microfiber pollution at the source.

“As brands navigate growing sustainability commitments and regulatory demands, the collaboration delivers a proven and effective solution that empowers brands to address two critical environmental issues while preserving performance and recyclability.”
