The expansion is supported by North American fashion company J.Crew alongside other stakeholders within the textile sector.
The newly established Eridenibatu farm spans 200ha and is home to 600 cashmere goats. It will enable experts and working professionals to exchange ideas about solutions in sustainable cashmere production and to stay on the edge of industry advancements.
All three The Good Cashmere Standard (GCS) model farms serve as key platforms for conveying practical knowledge and demonstrating successful approaches to animal welfare to meet the growing demand for responsibly produced cashmere.
Training initiatives at the new farm have been underway since the middle of 2024.
J.Crew Group sustainability vice-president Katherine O’Hare said: “With the addition of Eridenibatu, we are pleased to now support two model farms operating in accordance with The Good Cashmere Standard.
“Model farms play a crucial role in advancing responsible cashmere production under The Good Cashmere Standard in Inner Mongolia as they establish best practices in responsible cashmere production. This initiative also aligns with our goal of sourcing 100% of the key fibres used in our materials from sustainable sources.”

By GlobalDataSince 2020, the Aid by Trade Foundation, through the Global Cashmere Standard, has been establishing guidelines for the production of cashmere in Inner Mongolia that prioritise sustainability.
In 2023 approximately 9,100 farms in Inner Mongolia housed a total of 4.3m goats that were part of the GCS and verified around 2,200t of cashmere wool.
Over 50 global textile companies and brands, including Bestseller, J.Crew, Galeries Lafayette, H&M, s.Oliver, and The White Company source their cashmere wool from this verified supply for their products.
GCS China representative Figo Li said: “The Good Cashmere Standard’s model farms are a source of inspiration, promoting a team spirit among GCS herders and partners by exemplifying the best practices under the Good Cashmere Standard.
“We are very pleased to be working with our partners to ensure that our third model farm will show herders feasible solutions for the wellbeing of animals, people, and nature and will make it easier for interested herders to make a start in sustainable cashmere production.”
In 2022 GCS started creating model farms to assist herders in shifting to sustainable cashmere production.
Model farms serve as hubs for disseminating knowledge across the industry.
The farms receive both technical and material support from GCS and its partners to conduct training for fellow herders and neighbouring farms. In addition to organisational assistance, financial aid is provided to cover training expenses. These farms open their gates up to four times annually for goat herders keen on adopting sustainable practices.
