Donghua is a multi-disciplinary university based in Shanghai, China (Mainland), with a focus on textile innovation and research.

Shein partnered with Donghua University as part of its commitment to convert 31% of the polyester used in its branded products into recycled polyester by 2030.

The newly developed process boasts the capability to recycle a broader spectrum of polyester materials, encompassing both pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. This includes discarded textiles and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) PET bottles.

Shein said that such versatility in feedstock acceptance broadens sourcing options and enhances its cost-effectiveness, providing a competitive edge over existing recycled polyester alternatives.

Researchers at Donghua University have conducted extensive testing on the recycled polyester produced via this novel method. The results are claimed to be promising; the fabrics maintain their material properties even after multiple recycling cycles.

The process also involves a chemical breakdown of inputs, followed by a sophisticated refinement and reconstitution at the polymer level.

Shein is now poised to take this laboratory-scale innovation to the next level by partnering with select fibre manufacturers. The goal is to establish a commercial-scale production facility capable of generating recycled polyester fibres.

The anticipated operational launch is set for June this year, with an ambitious annual production target of 3,000 metric tonnes.

Shein global public affairs head, EMEA president and Singapore general manager Leonard Lin said: “Our goal is to leverage innovation and technology to help solve industry-wide challenges. In line with our evoluSHEIN strategy, we have invested in the research and development of a new polyester recycling process that allows us to incorporate a broader variety of feedstock, achieve better cost efficiencies, and recycle polyester multiple times without compromising the material properties of the polyester produced.

“This will be a critical step towards our goal of reducing our reliance on virgin polyester and supporting a broader industry transition. Shein will continue to look for more opportunities to partner with ecosystem players to accelerate use of recycled polyester.”

Shein introduced the evoluSHEIN x Anitta collection in September 2024, which features garments crafted from Regracell, a blend of recycled textile waste and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood sources known for its softness and breathability.

Moreover, since 2022, Shein has been collaborating with Aloqia (formerly Queen of Raw) to integrate surplus fabrics from other brands into exclusive designs.

This partnership culminated in the launch of the limited-edition Shein X Rescued collection in May 2024, which showcased creations by Shein X designers using materials sourced through Aloqia.

Recently, the global online on-demand retailer unveiled Shein Foundation, a new non-profit arm to promote community inclusivity and sustainability in regions where the brand has a presence.
