In recent years, the sustainability of Egyptian cotton farming has faced challenges due to climate change, water scarcity, and fluctuating market demands. The partnership between Better Cotton and CEA aim to propel sustainable Egyptian cotton farming practices and ensure fair working conditions for farmers.
Central to this collaboration is the adoption of sustainable farming practices, further training, and support for farmers, and adherence to rigorous environmental and social standards. By implementing these measures, Egyptian cotton farmers will be equipped to reduce water consumption, minimise chemical pesticide usage, and improve soil health, fostering more sustainable and resilient cotton production.
“We are excited about this strategic partnership with Better Cotton in Egypt,” said Khaled Schuman, CEA’s executive director. “By combining our expertise and resources, we can drive positive change in Egyptian cotton farming practices and secure a sustainable future for our industry. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our vision to globally authenticate the legacy of Egyptian cotton.”
Moreover, this partnership grants CEA access to Better Cotton’s extensive network of industry stakeholders, including brands, retailers, and textile mills committed to sourcing sustainable cotton. As a result, Egyptian cotton products will enjoy increased market access, ensuring fair returns for farmers and bolstering the growth of the Egyptian textile industry.
Alan McClay, CEO of Better Cotton, expressed his optimism and added: “Egypt’s cotton is globally renowned, and our renewed strategic partnership with Cotton Egypt Association will allow us to build on our work to make cotton farming in the country a more climate resilient, environmentally friendly and responsible activity.”
Better Cotton states Egyptian cotton is a symbol of luxury and excellence in the textile industry and to protect it both organisations are building upon the foundations laid by the Egyptian Cotton Project, a collaboration between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, and the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) in 2020.
