The victims, union leaders affiliated with the Sindicato de Trabajadores de Gildan San Miguel (SITRAGSAM) in Honduras, were targeted in a tragic attack on 24 June.
The union leaders identified as SITRAGSAM President Xiomara Beatriz Cocas, former President Delmer Josué García, Delegate José Rufino Ortiz, and Delegate Lester Arnulfo Almendarez, were dedicated individuals working tirelessly to advocate for the rights and welfare of workers. The loss of Ms. Cocas’ son, Eduardo Alexander Meléndez, in the brutal attack has further deepened the tragedy.
Expressing profound condolences, the FLA stands in solidarity with SITRAGSAM, the Central General de Trabajadores (CGT), and the families, friends, and colleagues of all 13 victims.
The FLA recognises the profound impact this senseless act of violence has on the labour movement in Honduras and emphasises the urgent need for justice.
Considering the escalating violence in Honduras, the FLA urges all its members involved in sourcing or production within the country to prioritise the safety and well-being of workers and union representatives. It calls upon companies to evaluate and implement additional measures that ensure the protection of their employees and those advocating for workers’ rights.
The FLA remains committed to promoting and safeguarding workers’ rights globally. This tragic incident serves as a sombre reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by labour organisations and the critical importance of upholding human rights, worker protections, and social responsibility in the global supply chain.
