The global apparel industry noticed a 24.2% drop in IT hiring activity in October 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 58.17% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The apparel industry’s overall hiring activity declined 6.86% when compared with September 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.25% share of the global apparel industry’s hiring activity in October 2022, down 1.92% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of October 2022 were 38.19% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 68.23% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 70.73% emerged as the top IT occupation in the apparel hiring activity in October 2022, a 28.6% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 12.82% in October 2022, down 22.64% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 7.33% share in October 2022, a growth of 0.39% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 5.09% share in October 2022 and a drop of 25.73% over September 2022.
Top five apparel companies by recruitment activity in October 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 22.42% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global apparel industry during October 2022 over September 2022.
Amazon posted 2,047 IT jobs in October 2022 and registered a drop of 23.3% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 335 jobs and a 4.69% growth. Inter IKEA Holding with 119 IT jobs and Dollar Tree with 96 jobs, recorded a 10.53% decline and a 57.52% drop, respectively, while NIKE recorded a 22.12% drop with 81 job postings during October 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in apparel industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global apparel IT hiring activity in October 2022 with a 65.47% share, which marked a 17.21% drop over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 19.78%, registering a 25.4% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with an 11.74% share and a 49.76% drop over September 2022.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.99% and a month-on-month drop of 22.22%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.02%, registering a 65.05% decrease over the previous month.
